Of Babies and Training

I probably should write kids or children in the place of babies, in the title, but then I also know that the BB will forever be a baby to me, no matter how old he gets. He is growing like a weed, with each passing day I miss my little baby, who I could cuddly all day long, who had cheeks that were always hanging, because they used to be so heavy. I have a tallish, skinny boy on my hands instead now. And thus the time runs.

I am in great agony and confusion these days, over the BB's toilet training. He is obviously well versed with the way of doing it, on his own whatever, when indoors, but my problem is with times when we go out. Not always do we go to places with toilets at hand, and often when we leave home, we are not sure of how long would we be out. Add to that, the GP's and my paranoia, about taking the BB to a public toilet, and you have a confused puddle of a mother that is me. I find it regressive to put him in a diaper, when he obviously does not need one, and yet not wanting to get him into public toilets, what option am I left with when we are on long outings. I wonder if other mother's have faced the same dilemma, with their little ones, or am I just being stupidly paranoid. I don't understand, what would be the right way of going about things at this point in time. Any pieces of advice, from others who have been there done that, how did you make the transition complete?

Thank God M is older now...Since BB is a boy, he doesn't have to sit so using a public bathroom is easier for him (you)...Take a lot of wet wipes with you and wipe everything...

oh yes tell me abt it... I used to dread it, now that I have started taking ojas out daiperless (he is toilet trained but not potty but he usually does it in the mornings) I am always worrying like shit

I did or am doing two things to overcome whatever I can
1. we taught him to do susu standing... and he stands on his toes he reaches the comode standing and doesnt really have to touch it at all to get infections
2. I try and let N take him to mens urinals if we are together. I believe the chances of catching an infection there are less...

and still if we are unsure abt the cleaniless we let him do on the floor of the toilet in the drain near the corner and then clean it

You know, I used to worry, but have been lucky here that I always get clean toilets. I also carry anti bacterial wipes and if she has to sit on the toilet, I wipe, and then put a layer of toilet tissue on the seat ( I know am wasting paper, but can't not do it :(), and only then is she allowed to use the toilet. Most of the time, the public toilets are very clean here - but I still do all this. I have a tougher time in India. Poohi just refuses to use a toilet if she is not happy about it's cleanliness. Once she controlled herself for 10 hours and I was cursing myself for going on that trip :(
Am sure you will be able to work out something that suits you, GM. All the best!

Sraboney - I know what you mean. Yes, wipes are a good idea, I will carry them along.

Monika - Fortunately the BB stands n does it too, makes it a bit easier for me. What about long drives? Yahaan pe road side ka option bilkul nahin hai, even on country roads, waise time pe kya? Like yesterday we went to this garden, it was huge, and we were walking around, he needed to pee, bad, there was no toilet near by, and he could not hold it indefinitely, I had to put a diaper on him... don't have much of a choice in such cases. Please tell me what you do!!!! PS - No drain on the floors either here. ;)

Smitha - Ho;ding for 10 hours, the little girl... wow! Well done. Wipes, i will carry for sure now, its just the long outings into wilderness, or long drives, that I still need to figure out.

Arre, nahi, GM..dont put him back on diapers if he's already out of it.

With Namnam also I remember being worried and anxious like you. But thankfully she took to the transition quite well. I'm sure the BB will too very soon :).

Yes, do keep lots of wipes handy.

Hi GM,

My son uses potty at home most of the time. I started making him sit in potty from 5 months just to get used to . He is 28 month old and not verbal yet, so it's not a good idea to train him diaper free so he still uses diapers. He is also scared of public restrooms , so I am seriously thinking about buying this http://www.amazon.com/Fisher-Price-L1496-Potty-On-the-Go/dp/B000K7IF1O
for our short trips around town.

Wait why are you afraid of bathrooms? The bathrooms there shoulder be clean right?

You can always buy a portable potty with disoable liners and stick that in your car.

PS: I have let the boys go on the side of the road away from public eye many times. Like on our drive to WA< hmmm yeah pulled to the side :)

dr.antony - Yes, ofcourse.

Deeps - Wipes are coming in soon, and I just have to find a way to make it work.

Anon/CS - That's a good thing to keep handy, thanks for sharing the link. I have to find a way to be out and about, without putting him in diapers.

Sraikh - Yes, cleaner, but kids are so small, I am so so scared of infections. I am seriously considering the portable potty, seems like a good idea! ;)

My daughter is 2.5 yrs old. She’s potty-trained at home for the last couple of months but I still put her in diapers when I go out, though she doesn’t ever use them. I’m not sure but I think around age 3, I can transition her to diaper-less full time. Does that sound right?

When you're out for long or going on a long trip, I'd recommend carrying a portable toilet seat. It can be put on any toilet if he needs to go potty. P has this one -- http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00004TIHX/ref=pd_lpo_k2_dp_sr_1?pf_rd_p=486539851&pf_rd_s=lpo-top-stripe-1&pf_rd_t=201&pf_rd_i=B000LJJOR0&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=1PFMAT7BPW4B598H924C

I also carry a tiny disinfectant spray for wiping the regular seat before placing the child seat on it. And regular wipes for the hands.

well I have a disposable potty seat in my car all the time but havent really used it yet

I know what u mean when we went to chickmanglur now we put him in the daiper for the drive and I think I will do that when I go to delhi this time too in train but I dont think a day or two will regress them much and plus I make sure I talk to him and tell him why he is going to be in daiper today
